Chapter 2: The Flashback (rewritten)

My 18th birthday was a month ago. My parents threw me a huge party at our house and invited a whole bunch of my friends and told them to bring friends. Its parties and events like these that got me the nickname “the kid with 100 friends”. I don’t really know every one there. Sometimes I feel more like the Great Gatsby than some one off of Cheers, where everyone knows your name. It’s not my choice; my parents want me to be more popular than the “mean kids” at school. They seem to think that the popular kids at school are all stuck up, and they think that by making me popular, I would break the stereotype and people would love me more, even though, some already love me. They bought me a Brand new Chevy Camaro! I’ve been saving up for it since I heard about the new concept car. Parents thought it was taking me too long working at a movie rental store so they decided to buy me one for my birthday. What could I say? Sure I was looking forward to buying my own first car but I wasn’t going to argue with such a great gift.
When my parents gave it to me, they put certain stipulations on me being allowed to drive it. Stipulations like, if I ever drive without my license, I’m grounded for a week. If I’m ever caught speeding, grounded for a month. I am not allowed to drive at night. “It’s too dangerous”, my parents say, but I don’t see anything wrong with it. They say that if I go for a drive at night, I have to first tell them where I’m going, when I’m going to be back, then make sure I have a cell phone with me and I have to call them every time I go somewhere. Sure, these rules were annoying but it wasn’t something I couldn’t live with. Just between you and me, although some rules made total sense, I would still do 60 down main streets, as long as there wasn’t a cop around, of course. I haven’t been caught yet, so, no need for my parents to find out. It was a great way to give the girls a thrill. My problem is, by the time I was comfortable to have a girl in the car with me alone, we are already friends. Stupid friend zone.
Listen, girls can make you do some strange things, sometimes things you could not imagine yourself doing. She came with my friend, Michael, and his sister. The girls headed strait to the open bar (it served soda) and Mike came to see me. “Hey Nick! Happy birthday, man.”
“Thanks. Thanks for coming. Who’s the girl?”
“Dude, that’s my sister’s friend. She’s in our graduating class. I didn’t even notice her until Rose brought her over for a sleepover. Dude, she was naked in MY shower!” I slapped him in the stomach.
“Come on, man, knock it off. What’s her name?”
“Uh… Melissa, Marissa, Patricia? To be completely honest with you, I’m not really sure, I just call her B.B.”
“B.B.?”
“Yeah man! Big Boobs?”
“Hey! What did I tell you?”
“Sorry, but you can’t deny it. She’s fricken’ hot!”
“Well, that is true.”
“DUDE! YOU GOT ROCK BAND!”
Totally losing track of what we were talking about, he ran off to go “shred the frets”, as he put it. He was always a wannna-be rocker. He had no skill and barely knew how to play Rock Band but he liked to pretend he did. I, on the other hand, decided to go meet this Melissa or Marissa girl. I still needed to know her name.
I stopped by the bar and got a Sprite then found her and Rose next to the pool. She had changed into a green 2-piece swimsuit, which was absolutely gorgeous with her dark red hair. They were talking about… whatever girls talk about, when I walked up. “Oh, happy birthday, Nick!” Rose said. “Thanks Rose. Who’s your friend? Hi, I’m Nick.”
“So I hear.” She shook my hand and right away I noticed how soft her skin was.
Rose introduced us, “Nick, this is Melanie. Melanie, this is my brother’s best friend, Nick.”
“Nice to meet you, Melanie.” I said, almost stumbling over my own words.
“You too. Happy birthday, I guess.”
“Thanks. So how do you know Rose?”
“We are on the same volley ball team. She’s like the little sister I never had.”
“Hmm, I guess I can see the relation.” I joked nervously. They both laughed, then Rose, being her devious self, said, “Well it looks like you two are hitting it off pretty well. I’ll leave you two to visit. Have fun!” Then she ran off. All of a sudden, I became twice as nervous. “Nice one, Rose. She’s always trying to get me to date some one.” As soon as I had said that, I regretted it. “That’s funny, She told me I’d get to meet a ‘hot guy’ at the party if I went with her.” I think my cheeks went as red as her hair as I tried to keep my cool. “That’s a ‘little sister’ for you. Hehehe…” I laughed nervously.
“Hahaha, you’re a funny guy!”
“Well that’s what people tell me.”
I don’t know what it was but something came over me and I just went with it. “Tell you what, I’m not one for big crowds. Want to go somewhere less crowded?”
“Isn’t this your’ party?”
“It’s more like my parents party for me. If I had my way, half these people wouldn’t even be here.”
“Oh, so a ‘parents want you to be more social’ type of thing?”
“No, it’s more like a ‘be friends with every one here’ thing”
“Oh. Well, where do you want to go?”
“Come on, I’ll show you.”
I really had no idea where I was going. My heart was racing a million beats a minute. I was just glad she said yes. She grabbed her shoes and a big shirt and we snuck out the back yard through the side gate. Her hand was in mine as I lead her through the crowd and to the side of the house. We ran down the street just because we could, trying to get away from the party without anyone seeing us. We just started walking through the neighborhood with no place to go. I was still of nervous being there alone with her but things started to settle in me. I wasn’t sure what we should talk about. Apparently feeling the same awkward feeling I was, Melanie’s voice broke the silence. “So, where are we going?”
“Heh heh, um, I’m not actually sure. I didn’t really have a place in mind. You don’t mind if we just walk do you?”
“Not at all, but I know a spot around here where we can be alone. It’s where I go to get away from it all and just think. Come on.” She grabbed my hand and we cut through the next ally way. I guess she knew where we were going because now we were jogging a little bit. When we came to the other side of the ally way, we had reached the edge of the neighborhood. She lead me to the walk way going up from the sidewalk, going along side the wall blocking us from the freeway. She jumped over the railing and kept going. I stopped. I wasn’t sure if we should go down there. “Come on, just jump the railing, or are you too scared to?” I could hear her patronizing me from the tone in her voice. “Yeah yeah, I’m coming.” She ran up the far slope under one end of the bridge, so I jumped the railing and ran up there after her. When I got up there, she pulled me down to her level. We were both laughing. That’s when I noticed her beautiful green eyes. They were so amazing like someone found the two most beautiful emeralds and crafted them into eyes. Her fiery red hair was thick and had just a little waviness to it, like a pond on a breezy day. Her skin was softer than the touch of a baby’s hand on your’ face. I didn’t know whether to kiss her or look away before I did something I regretted. Before I could stop my self, it just came out. “You really are the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.” She blushed. “Sorry, I can’t believe I just said that. Wow, now I’m embarrassed. “
“Do you really mean that?”
“Yeah, it just came out. I totally didn’t mean to say that.”
“No, the first thing you said.”
“Oh, um… yeah, I guess I did.”
“No one’s ever told me that before. I’m either ‘hot’, or ‘sexy’. No one’s ever treated like a person, I was always just something to get in bed with.”
“Wow, I thought girls liked being called hot.”
“Well, don’t get me wrong, sometimes we do, but it’s not a term of affection. It’s more like a term a guy says to his chili-cheese burger right before he devours it, you know?”
“Haha, yeah, guess I never though about it that way.” There was an awkward silence for a moment. “Thanks, you really are a sweet guy.”
“Heh, thanks. I’m usually not this out going with girls. It’s kind of funny that I’ve actually gotten this far.”
“No need to be nervous.” She said in a seductive voice as she placed her hand on the side of my face. I was staring into her deep green eyes as she leaned over and put her lips to mine. It was like nothing I had ever experienced. Her lips were so soft. Time faded away. I have no idea how long we were there. I just focused on kissing her.
